Homework

All G1 – 5 students are being asked to write a letter introducing themselves to their new teacher (whether or not they are staying at ISZL).

This letter should contain some information about you as a person (i.e. family, pets, languages spoken, friends, etc.) Secondly, it should contain information about your learning (i.e. favourite subjects/ UOIs, extra-curricular clubs or sports they enjoy, top books they’ve read, etc.).

The letter should have your current class and name clearly indicated.

This letter should be handwritten neatly or typed up and printed. Please hand it in on Friday.

Book Talks

Today we met with Mrs Meeks, our Librarian to learn about Book Talks. One of the purposes of Book Talks is to suggest new books for people; encourage them to read books they might not normally choose for themselves.

Mrs Meeks shares The London Eye Mystery

We learned that when we give a Book Talk we DON'T recount all the parts of the book.

We can talk about the book and personal connections. When Mrs Meeks talked about Ramon Quimby, Age 8, she told us how she comes from the same town as the author, Beverly Cleary and how the streets are named after Ramona and its characters.

We can do a REREAD:

Look how animated Mrs Meeks is.

This is when we read a part from the text. Mrs Meeks called it the 'trigger', a part that really called out to us and engaged us in the text. This does not always have to be at the beginning.

In rereads of this type we have no discussion. This way we are not in danger of revealing the ending of the story. In a reread of this type, we are sharing our favourite part in the hope we can capture the interest of our audience and they will want to read it too.

Sometimes when we do a reread we can have a discussion, this might be more appropriate when reading a non-fiction book that has facts in it. Mrs Meeks read part of The London Eye Mystery to us and some of us had been on the London Eye and were able to share our experiences. She stopped at the critical part, which of course made us ALL want to find out what happens next.

At the end of all the rereads, we ALL wanted to read the books she chose.

Homework - Reading Response

As part of our homework this week students were working on responding to literature. They were assigned 5 tasks of a different nature:

1. Write a book review on Destiny Quest - remember to put your name
2. Write a five question book quiz
3. Create a poster, animoto, prezi (use the school accounts) or other item to promote your book. Remember to always include author and title.
4. Prepare a book talk to give to a small group on Friday.

Task 3 was to create a poster promoting their book which would be put up in the library. The students were given a choice for presenting their work.

Here are a few:

Reflection on Grade 3

At this time of year we begin thinking about how far we have come since the beginning of the year. Student Led Conferences are coming up, you will be working on goals for the end of the year and I am selecting photos for the yearbook.

All this makes those initial nerves about our Field Trip to Verbier seem such a long time ago.

For your homework this week, I am setting you a 100 word challenge. I would like you to think about all the things we have done in Grade 3 and write them below in no more than 100 words. Try to describe them using interesting adjectives and adverbs. Imagine your audience is our current Grade 2 students who are curious about Grade 3.

I will then combine some of your ideas to write our Yearbook Reflection.

Spelling Homework - Word Webs

Today in word study we created word webs for the words joy and end.

For your homework, choose one of the base words below and make your own word web in your blue spelling book.

build        know        sign        move
graph       kind          carry       cover

You can add prefixes and suffixes to your basewords. You may also make compound words.

REMEMBER, the baseword must NOT change its meaning.

Don't forget to change the silent e if you have to when adding suffixes. All spellings should be accurate.
